Corfu and Sarandë by Ferry: How to Plan the Return Journey
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
The ferry makes Corfu and Sarandë practical neighbours, but it is an international border crossing, not a local shuttle. The operator’s published 2026 timetable includes conventional ferries taking about 1 hour 15 minutes and fast craft taking about 30 minutes. Departures vary sharply by date, so select the exact travel day before building a connection around them.
The clock can mislead you
Greece (Corfu) is one hour ahead of Albania. Read every departure and arrival in the local time used by the relevant port and let the operator’s booking confirmation govern. Never calculate a tight airport, bus or excursion connection from crossing duration alone.
Fast craft save time at sea, while conventional ferries may carry vehicles. The ticket must match the passenger, route, date and vessel type. A cheap fare is not useful if it leaves too little time for formalities or if the return belongs to a different tariff.
Border formalities
Everyone passes border control. Carry the original passport or identity document accepted for your nationality and check current entry rules for both Albania and Greece. Albania’s foreign ministry says visa-free travellers using a passport generally need it valid for at least 3 months beyond their intended departure and issued within the previous 10 years; nationality and document type can change what applies.
Arrive by the operator’s stated check-in time, not at the sailing time. Queues can grow in summer, and a ticket does not remove immigration and security procedures. Families should verify documents and any consent requirements for minors before travel.
Same-day trip or one-way transfer?
A same-day Corfu trip works only when the dated schedule leaves a useful block ashore after check-in and border time at both ends. Corfu Town’s old centre is a sensible focus; trying to tour the whole island makes the day fragile. Keep the final return conservative because a missed last sailing can mean an unplanned overnight stay.
As a transfer, the route is especially useful for Corfu airport, but do not book a flight shortly after the nominal arrival. Allow for disembarkation, passport control, luggage and the onward journey from the port. On the Albania side, confirm how you will reach accommodation after the last arrival.
Booking checklist
- Check the operator’s dated timetable again shortly before travel.
- Confirm whether the ticket is one-way, return or same-day return.
- Use local port times and note the vessel type.
- Carry the correct original travel document.
- Leave generous time for border queues and onward transport.
- Check baggage, bicycle, vehicle and cancellation conditions with the operator.
Verdict
The crossing is straightforward when treated as a border journey with two ports and two clocks. It becomes risky when travellers treat the 30-minute fast crossing as the entire trip. For a day out, protect the return; for an airport connection, protect the flight with a large buffer or an overnight stay.
